Volunteer Opportunities

Lubee Conservation

          Lubee Keeper Internships & Docents

Lubee has Conservation, Education and Keeper internship/docent positions year-round at our Bat Center, Gainesville, Florida. Anyone interested should submit a cover letter, resume and brief writing sample (no more than three pages) to the address below (email with attachments is fine). Interns/docents need to devote at least 4 hours per week and spend at least one semester. The more commitment you can make, the more we would like to hear from you! For summer internships, we recommend you apply in winter or early spring.

Keeper Interns and Docents
  • Work with the world’s largest species of flying fox
  • Work alongside bat keepers looking after bats; mucking out, feeding etc
  • Learn about fruit bat bat husbandry, cage design, behavioral enrichment
Conservation-Development Intern/Docent
  • Identify organizations and businesses (conservation and environmental organizations, and others) around North America, and worldwide, that may be interested in joining us and build a comprehensive database of potential friends/donors
  • Conduct mailings and follow-up with potential partners to expand our friends/donors network
  • Draft letters and/or article about Lubee for public distribution through magazines, journals and newsletters
  • Regularly review the Web for information on bats and others involved in ocean conservation
  • Update web site as necessary (web page experience helpful but not necessary)
  • Assist Project Director and Curator on related activities as necessary
Conservation-Education Intern/Docent
  • Develop standard powerpoint presentations about fruit & nectar bats for different target audiences
  • Give in house & outreach talks to school groups and private tour groups, and take groups on short guided tours of the bat center
  • Demonstrate live bats to some groups
  • Develop education materials on fruit & nectar bats
  • Seek grants to develop and decorate an education room
