Common Name : Little Golden-mantled Flying Fox Distribution : Philipines (except palawan region), Talaud Isls ( Indonesia ) Status : CITES - Appendix II. IUCN/SSC Action Plan (1992) - Vulnerable. IUCN 2002 - Vulnerable (A2c)
The Little golden-mantled flying fox one of the smallest fruit bats in the world and is considered vulnerable throughout its range. The species is endemic to the Philippines , and a ssociated with primary and well-developed secondary lowland forest from sea-level to about 1100 m, rarely to 1250 m, uncommon outside of forest. This species is most common on small islands and uncommon to rare on larger islands. This bat is vulnerable in the wild due to hunting and loss of habitat. .P. pumilus does not tolerate disturbance and avoids purely agricultural land. P. pumilus fly in the upper canopy, which might explain why they are not hunted and so rarely netted.
The Little golden-mantled flying fox has a wingspan of 30 inches (76.2cm) and a weight or 7 ounces (200g). This species prefers more solitary roosting as opposed to living in large colonies like other fruit bats. Little golden-mantled flying foxes reach maturity at 1 year old, have a gestation period of 120-180 days and produce a single offspring. This species tends to live in small groups or individually but will aggregate in small numbers in fruiting trees to feed along-side other species of bats.
The Lubee Foundation, Silliman University CENTROP and the DENR of the Philippines have initiated conservation action including captive breeding to safeguard this vulnerable species.
